Anyone who knows me, knows what a huge fan I am of Tolkein and the movies based around his books. So I thought I might as well start a thread about them to see who else shared a similiar love/obsession for them!

Love. Love. Love. Love. Love.
I can't express. LotR was definitely my first obsession and will remain as such for a long time to come.
How many Extended Edition marathons have you had?
Favorite Character in each respective series?
Do you prefer book or movie?
Do you agree with changing book verse to make the movie more interesting? (IE Azgog)
Those are a few of my first questions :]

I try to have a n Extended edition marathon every christmas so that it actually becomes a family tradition lol! The IMAX cinema in London does an all nighter of the normal versions, which are really hard going, but still a great experience, especially since the last one we went to Ian McKellen turned up and announced to us all that he had the script to The Hobbit in his bag (yeah it has been a while since we went to the all nighter!) Sam was always my favourite character from LOTR and Bilbo was my favourite in The Hobbit, although I have a feeling in the new film, Smaug may just be promoted (purely due to him being voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch!) I kind of accept the fact that the films are going to be different from the books as I think it would be difficult to be successful if they kept the films exactly like the books. The one thing I don't like though is the introduction of the new elf character... can't remember her name... into the next film!

Ah Tauriel? I have a soft spot for Evangeline Lily simply because she was in "Lost"... and I started watching that show because of Dominic Monaghan. :] I am trying very hard to reserve judgement on her character until I see her... but I'm simultaneously horrified and intrigued if they try to make it into a romance with Legolas. I've gathered that there may be tension between the two... but I hope that's not a huuuuge story arch. Random fact, I'd love to get a tattoo in elvish but I'm terrified something will be spelled wrong

haha, see I really do not like her because I didn't like her as Kate in Lost! I've been meaning to get my name in elvish tattooed on my neck for years, but never got round to it... one day!

I have mixed feelings about Kate myself. She was totally a BA in the beginning and then she was kinda weenie and wishy washy between Jack and Sawyer. I can understand that. I figure it takes a good actress to make you so unsure about a character

I absolutely love LOTR/The Hobbit! It's probably my favourite series next to Tomb Raider. I pretty much grew up with it and will never ever (to some of my friends disbelief) stop loving it! My favourite character in LOTR would have to be Faramir. I just loved how strong a character he was, even though Denethor was just a complete ass to him before and after Boromir's death. I also loved how wise he was too. I remember reading The Two Towers recently and reading Tolkien describe him as 'a younger version of Gandalf'. Very true! My favourite in The Hobbit would have to be Thorin. When I first read The Hobbit, I thought that he was just a stubborn angry dwarf who only lusted after gold. Now after reading the back stories regarding Thorin, I understood his character more and really felt sorry for him. Plus, Richard Armitage's amazing portrayal in An Unexpected Journey made me fall in love with Thorin even more.
I'm not sure what to think of Tauriel as well. i'll hold judgment until I see the film, but I have confidence that Peter Jackson & Co. will keep the main story focused on the dwarves and Bilbo. I've heard rumours amongst LOTR fans that she may be a love interest with either Kili or Legolas? Not sure, but if so I hope that it's executed like Arwen & Aragorn's story in the LOTR films. Even though Arwen was only mentioned in the books a few times, I thought that Peter Jackson and Co did a beautiful job at crafting that relationship.

I suppose you're right- with the Aragorn and Arwen mention of relationship. They are pretty much the only relationship visible in LotR, so it'd probably be okay if they handled it similarly. I really hated how they cut out the houses of healing and it's only an Extended Version thing where you see Faramir and Eowyn share a moment... or two. ;]

Oh man. There is just eye candy galore in this trailer. I can't wait for the movie. I mean really- Bard, Legolas, our usual suspect dwarves, LEE PACE. mrrrrr. and yes. I almost died when they had Benedict Cumberbatch.
Now, I do have a question. I have always said the dragon's name as "smog" like... when there is smog outside from like... pollution.... but have definitely realized that they say something more like "Sm-ow-g"... Is that me reading horribly, being american.. or what? haha.
I can't decide how I feel about Tharanduil telling Tauriel not to give Legolas false hope. Like... they had to throw romance AND heartbreak in one trailer!? oh well.

yeah the pronounciation of Smaug is like the ow in now I'm hating the whole Tauriel thing the more they show of it... it's bad enough making up a completely new character just for the sake of it, then having the actress I find so irritating in my favourite movie series play that part, but to ship her with one of my favourite characters is beyond blood boiling!!! Just have to keep replaying Benedict's role of smaug in my head, and it takes me back to that happy place where Tauriel doesn't exist! So excited to see how they have made him into the necromancer as well, but Smaug is the one I'm most excited about seeing!

I literally nearly screamed with happiness when Smaug appeared! Benedict's voice is just amazing! Never thought I'd find a dragons voice so attractive! lol I'm unsure about Tauriel too, but I'll hold my judgment until I watch the film.

So... here's my review of The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug... I tried really hard to like it, I really did, but I have to say I was pretty disappointed and have no idea what Peter Jackson was thinking when he was editing this film! The first half of the film was just so rushed! Beorn's part was completely slashed to pieces (hardly worth keeping him in the film really!), Mirkwood was fleeting and all to keep the stupid pointless fact of including Legolas and Tauriel in the story!!! Don't get me wrong they were both great, but did the story have to be cut so much just so these two had their screen time?! *sigh* Lake town was ok, but it was clear that the film was just being rushed along to get to Smaug... And let's face it, this film is all about Smaug!!! And I wasn't disappointed! He is beautiful and spectacular and everything I hoped he would be!!! Worth seeing the movie alone for him! In short: if you're a fan of the book, I wouldn't recommend seeing it as it'll probably piss you off no end how it has been cut, but if you want to see it for Smaug, then definitely go see it!

Yeah I agree with you about Beorn's scenes! I was expecting soo much more of him. Fingers crossed there will be extra scenes in the extended edition! I guess adding Legolas in was fan service. Although I did squeal about the comment made by Legolas to Gloin about Gimli in his locket! I was a bit dumbfounded about the changes to the story, as some of them were unnecessary, but thankfully I treat the books and films separately, otherwise I would not have enjoyed it one bit! But, Smaug was everything I hoped he would be. He was just such a beautifully designed dragon. Probably the best I've seen in fantasy film in years, and Benedict Cumberbatch nailed the part. I was also disappointed that Bombur didn't get stuck in the river in the Mirkwood forest. That was my favourite part in the book

Same An Unexpected Journey extended edition had more of the Rivendell scenes from the book in there, so I'm hoping it gets added it to The Desolation of Smaug Extended. Although I did love how poor Bombur got stuck in that barrel and fought his way out of it. It was such a Bombur thing to do

I adore the Middle Earth series ^_^ Can't wait to see The Battle of the 5 Armies! I think the boyfriend and I are booking premier seats and whatnot to make it a special occassion xD I really should re-read the novels - it's been so long! Tolkien was an absolute descriptive genius.
