I know this game has some scary locations and mild horror themes, but what I would love from the next game is some truly horrific locations. My wand wanders back to the blood covered beating womb like walls of Atlantis and I think seeing something like that on today's consoles would be amazing. I don't need Tomb Raider to be ultra realistic. The first game is the only one to really do something with those themes and I think it's a shame it's been abandoned.

You never know, they may have things like that in the new game, they have to see how well this one is received first!
From what I've seen though this game is still pretty horrific!

Maybe. I'm not holding my breath though, this one looks like it's more gruesome than horrific.

Me and Laurie have very different definitions of horror though

Some parts of the new TR look quite scary and I'm really glad of that. TR may not be a horror series but fear has always been a big part of it for me. The first encounter with a brute mutant in the RX-Tech Mines still makes me jump. I hope it's something that the series starts to bring back.

And having enemies just appear without an introduction. Anniversary killed every single encounter. Nobody will ever forget the first time they played The Lost Valley and having that T-rex appear out of nowhere. Even now when I play it I get a chill.

Yes. I always saw Tomb Raider as an adventure-horror game, come on, the Yeti's in TR2, the mutants in TR3, Atlantis, Cairo, Black Isle. They were horror games, even if subtly!
I'd love to see them take a very dark and horrific approach with the next one, bring back some frightening supernatural creatures. I get that the reboot is supposed to be 'realistic', but in reality, Lara would most likely die quite early on in the adventure.

I think background noise and music can really make or break a creepy atmosphere. When I think back on the levels that creeped me out the most in earlier games, it's usually the background ambiance I remember the most, those ghostly whispers in Antarctica, the gasps in Cairo, the groans on the Black Isle and the screams from the Sanitarium. Some of the background audio I've heard from the new one reminded me of some of the old background tracks and that gets me excited to think that old familiar feeling of 'I don't want go in there' might be back.

Whilst we are on the subject of background noise, one of the better moments of Anni was in Egypt, Temple of Khamoon. those background whispers and voices. That was very well done.

Absolutely, it's the dread that's the scariest part, not the reveal. I hope the new game is filled with these kind of moments. I particularly love going down into the pit at the end of the Great Wall in TR2, just the open darkness with that haunting monotone music echoing with skeletons littered across the floor still gives me the creeps! Whilst we are on the subject of background noise, one of the better moments of Anni was in Egypt, Temple of Khamoon. those background whispers and voices. That was very well done. I thought Anniversary was particularly effective in the Egypt areas. I wish they could've gotten the same feeling within Atlantis though. It felt way too 'clean' and not organic like the original.

I agree. The only part of Atlantis that stayed true was the first room with the wombs on the walls. But even that was still watered down. The whole of Atlantis was supposed to be like a womb, the walls were alive, blood pulsating through them.

Have to say, The Catacombs and the areas before it pretty much nailed exactly what I was looking for.

Was that in the Geothermal Caverns? That place had me really nervous. I desperately did not want to run in to Oni. I was a little disappointed by how not scary they turned out to be but the build up to them was immense and had me really nervous. Haven't been that nervous since TLR I'd say.

Yeah, I was really hoping for that concept art we saw years back. Even just looking at concepts of those creatures was terrifying.
