I feel privileged that my good friend Kayleigh Dray took the time out of her busy schedule to write an article about Lara Croft. I didn't know until it was finished what the topic was on, but loved it once I got my hands on it to read it! And today it has gone live, and you will find it hereIt does raise that question that seems to have died down a lot recently I think (probably becuase of the young age of the new Lara), but do you think Lara makes a good role model? Did she ever make a good role model in your eyes back in the day? For me I always saw her as the one woman I could look up to, as she was intelligent, strong, independent and didn't let anything stand in her way... I was a bit too young to get swept up in the whole sexualisation argument that happened at the time, so to me she was the perfect role model for any young girl. Now, as Lara is 7 years younger than me, she's more like a younger sister/cousin that I would want to scold/look after rather than be able to look up to... but I can imagine her being a good role for younger girls who are new to the series. What do you guys think?

I think she can be seen as a role model still. Yes she makes mistakes but she learns from them, and that i think teaches a valuable lesson in life.

I very much believe Lara makes a good role model, both old Lara and 'new Lara'. I was six years old when I started playing the Tomb Raider games and I haven't stopped since. Lara showed me that I can be strong when I'm afraid, that a woman is just as good as a man to get a job done and just because I am a woman, it doesn't make me any less unable to do what I want or inferior in the man-world. I can be sexy and confident, without being slutty or arrogant.
She taught me valuable lessons about standing up for myself, and to enjoy the world around me; To appreciate learning, and everything that comes with it, all the good, bad and ugly. It's because of Lara that I am working on getting my degree in mythology/metaphysics. And she also really sparked my interest in learning.
Lara is the role model, no doubt about it. She's set the bar for many game characters, male and female alike and people would do well to recognize her stance and her character in both 'retro' gaming world and today's gaming world.

PR Lara, the one who they'd stick in bikini photoshoots to cater to that fanboy audience, I don't believe is a good role model. Fortunately, she's been gone for a long time.
Game Lara, from TR1 right up to the TR2013 I think is a great role model, not just for women but for everybody. Angelina Jolie summed it up perfectly I think when she said that 'a lot of people in this very careful space, and she's just like - ah - really out there, and that's the perfect way'. I, myself, live in a very careful space, I'm not very sociable, I'm not very adventurous but Lara's always been a vehicle where I could be strong and adventurous and fearless and I don't think it matters whether you're a man or a woman because they're traits that I think we all want to have. Lara's always been a role model for me.

To the extent where we aren't going out and committing genocide, I don't see why she isn't.

Game Lara, from TR1 right up to the TR2013 I think is a great role model, not just for women but for everybody. That is very true, there is a difference between fanboy fodder and the personality that came out in the games and comics. I was seven when I first played TR and I there was just something that I was attracted to and inspired by. What I love now is that I have just graduated from university, so with the reboot Lara we are both trying to set ourselves up in the world, hopefully with no trips to Yamatai soon . Overall though, I don't see why she shouldn't be inspirational.

Sure, she's a good role model when it comes down to her determined work ethic, hunger for knowledge and learning, and overall ability to cope in such harsh environments. But not really for her murderous rampages and giant boobage.
